Making a Mark - Red Hot Press Printmakers 6 September - 7 October
Red Hot Press printmakers collaborated with Rum’s Eg Art & Craft Gallery in Romsey to exhibit exciting new work by students of all ages, many of whom have recently completed the 30 week Foundation in Printmaking Course at Red Hot’s Fine Art print studios in Southampton; some have also gone on to develop their work further taking a Diploma in Printmaking. Red Hot was set up by two Artist Printmakers, Sarah Mander and Katherine Anteney in 2004. Studio Director Sarah says: “Now in its fourth year The Foundation in Printmaking, which is the only course of its kind in the region, goes from strength to strength, we are delighted with the work that has been produced by the students and the opportunity for them to exhibit at Rum’s Eg. The Diploma students have also produced a really impressive body of work which shows how they have developed as printmakers”.
The studio exists to promote and develop an appreciation and understanding of Fine Art Printmaking and their aim is to encourage the use of printmaking as a vehicle for exploration, artistic expression, communication and creativity, while promoting an appreciation and understanding of printmaking to the wider public. The print facility caters for relief and intaglio printmaking techniques plus letterpress, bookbinding and screen printing. All are welcome to come and learn to use printmaking as a creative process - from interested beginners to accomplished printmakers.

The Microbial world is all around us and our very existence dependent on it. Two thirds of life on Earth is invisible to the naked human eye. There are over 100 million species of microorganisms inside and around us that make us unique and connected. Microbes know no borders, no boundaries or nationality.
Students from Mountbatten Secondary School and Wellow Primary explored and researched the microbial world in collaboration with art and science departments, looking at something small and making it large! A group of year 7 Mountbatten students also visited the Microscopy Unit at Southampton General Hospital in May to view crystals through electron microscopes. Environmental Artists Mark and Rebecca Ford worked with all year 7 Mountbatten students and many Wellow pupils to create sculptural forms and the artworks will then be exhibited in the grounds of Romsey Abbey with their research work on show at Rum’s Eg.

Daniel Clayton - An Exhibition of Collage 7th Sept - 15th Oct 2016
Rum’s Eg was pleased to support young, emerging artist Daniel Clayton with his exhibition of collage art.
Daniel had a couple of brain tumours at an early age which limited his balance and hearing. He quickly found that painting and drawing gave him complete freedom to express himself and enjoyed the playfulness of experimenting with different mediums.
While studying at Winchester School of Art, Daniel was also increasingly influenced by Pop Art, Expressionism and Matisse. He describes adapting to life in the UK after his childhood in Africa as both thrilling and terrifying and believes it is what gives his art its edge. Funds were raised to help Daniel with the cost of framing and displaying his artwork by the Tea Poets Collective which hold monthly poetry café events at the gallery.

Paul Jenkins works with impasto and metal foils to build up richly textured and subtle-coloured canvases. Sherley Phillips works in various media to create detailed semi-abstract paintings based on her travels, museum visits and the decorative arts. Ann Dawson is also inspired by the landscape and uses the shapes and patterns of fields and tracks near her home to capture the characterstics of a place with the play of the elements upon the landscape. |
Stitched - a Point of Departure 9 September - 31 October
Fibre artists, Susan Chapman and Hilary Marshall, aware of the rapid changes taking place in the world of textiles, have felt the need to respond once again to the traditional roots of this art form and to look with fresh eyes as some of its principal motifs.
Both artists have their roots in traditional patchwork and embroidery, but have journeyed long beyond the boundaries of its discipline.

The larger pieces were exhibited in the magnificent setting of the Romsey Abbey in the St Lawrence Chapel. Christmas at Rum's Eg - 6-22 December 2012

The ground floor gallery space was fully refurbished just in time for the initial opening of our special Christmas Exhibition and fund-raising event from the 6th to 22nd December. There was a rich and varied range of work, all by Hampshire or Hampshire associated Artists and Craftspeople - it gave a taste of things to come in future exhibitions with something to suite all tastes and budgets. Sales went extremely well - especially ceramics, woodwork, glasswork, jewellery and textiles. As expected, people absolutely loved it and can't believe we now have this in Romsey - many did all their Christmas shopping at Rum's Eg!
It was so successful, we would have been crazy to close and lose all the momentum we had created - so we decided we simply had to stay open while fund-raising continued..... and we have been catching up ever since!
