Please note that Prescription Art Test Valley is now a registered charity in its own right. HA&C CIC and Rum's Eg are proud to have been the inspiration behind the project and to have supported it in its early days. Click on this link to their website https://www.prescriptionarttestvalley.org
Prescription Arts at Rum's Eg
A new service from HA&C CIC at Rum's Eg to support patients referred from the four General Practices situated in and around Romsey.
A pilot project of six Art and six Singing sessions took place in January and February 2017 with further sessions since. They are already proving very beneficial for the participants and a new Charity 'Prescription Arts Test Valley' is to be formed. All of us at Rum's Eg who were closely involved in the inception and initial support for this great new scheme wish the new Charity well. We are delighted to have been the inspiration behind it and to have held many of the sessions at Rum's Eg. We will maintain a close affiliation with the new Charity. The Prescription Arts team report that the outcomes of the pilot project have been extremely rewarding for all involved and our volunteer team of organisers are working hard to ensure that this valuable service continues. We are working with Test Valley Community Services, GP practices and Health Practitioners to offer these activities at Rum's Eg and another venue for patients who may be suffering from stress, anxiety or mild depression - if you feel you might benefit please contact your GP to register your interest in the first instance. Participation in such activities is well proven to improve confidence and mental well-being. Rum's Eg is a friendly place and the service users (some complete novices to Art) have spent quality, social time working in our comfortable art studio with our lovely Artists, Catherine and Vicki. Here is some of their recent experimental artwork: |

‘When the days get cooler and shorter it is easy to go into hibernation and while the odd afternoon cosying up on the sofa with a movie can be fun it may be too much of a good thing if it becomes a daily event. You may find yourself dwelling too much on your ailments, relationship or financial worries, bereavement etc. which can lead to low mood, insomnia, sadness and depression.
Doctors now recognise the benefits of activities such as art and singing in lifting the mood, reducing anxiety and whereas previously they may have prescribed medication are now considering alternatives. However taking medication does not exclude you from being referred. In conjunction with Romsey and local GPs, a team at Rum’s Eg Gallery has set up courses of singing and art, which are available on ‘prescription referral’ from your family doctor or another member of their team e.g. practice nurse.
The courses are free, as all the costs have been covered by funds raised at Rum’s Eg so you don't need to pay a thing! All materials for art are provided and you don't need any experience or skill. The courses aim to provide fun, friendship and wellbeing. If you are interested in joining us or know anyone who might benefit all you need to do is make an appointment to see your GP or Practice Nurse and they can make the referral if they feel it is appropriate for you and your medical circumstances. We need a good group of people to make these courses worthwhile running so there may be a few weeks wait before enrolment. Please note that enrolment is by GP referral only.
Rum’s Eg is a friendly Gallery and Cafe with a large Art Studio space for workshops and activities; it is run by Hampshire Art & Craft CIC (a not-for-profit Arts enterprise) at 27 Bell Street, Romsey. The courses are held on the second floor and although an extension housing a lift is planned when they obtain enough funding, access is currently only by stairs.
The last fundraising event for Prescription Arts and other community Arts projects (working with schools and youth groups) was a Fish & Chip Quiz Night which was attended by 35 people on 21st October and raised £326.48. Then ‘A Wild Night Out’ with a three course banquet at Rum's Eg on Friday 25 November raised £864.33.

A Wild Night Out - 25 November 2016This event is a good example of one of our Fundraising events which raised a fantastic sum of £864.33 after costs to support our Community Arts Project ‘Prescription Arts’ which enables local GPs to prescribe a course of art or singing for their patients as an alternative to medication.
Diners were treated to a special dinner with locally sourced ingredients. Click here for upcoming and past HA&C CIC Fundraising Events |
